Going into the water with the horse, staying in the saddle. Not the same as making it swim: you can wade in chest-deep without the horse ever swimming.

the lagoon

🇪🇸 Spanish

🇮🇹 Italian

la marée basse
🇪🇸 Spanish
la marea baja
🇮🇹 Italian

🇸🇪 Swedish

🇵🇱 Polish
odpływ
🇷🇴 Romanian
mareea joasă
🇩🇰 Danish
lavvande
🇳🇴 Norwegian
lavvannet

The tide decides when you ride, not the other way round. At low tide the belt of firm sand is wide and safe; at high tide only dry deep sand is left, where a horse sinks and tires. German has two short unrelated words: Ebbe and Flut.

firm sand

🇫🇷 French
le sable ferme
🇪🇸 Spanish
la arena firme
🇮🇹 Italian
la sabbia soda
🇩🇪 German
der feste Sand
🇯🇵 Japanese
締まった砂 (shimatta suna)

a areia firme
🇸🇪 Swedish
fast sand
🇵🇱 Polish
ubity piasek
🇷🇴 Romanian
nisipul tare
🇩🇰 Danish
fast sand
🇳🇴 Norwegian
fast sand

Not the same as wet sand: all firm sand is wet, but not all wet sand is firm. The band that carries you is the one the sea has just left — damp enough to be packed, not yet dry enough to give way. That's where you canter, and nowhere else.

single file

🇫🇷 French
la file indienne
🇪🇸 Spanish
en fila india
🇮🇹 Italian
in fila indiana
🇩🇪 German
im Gänsemarsch
🇯🇵 Japanese

a fila indiana
🇸🇪 Swedish
gåsmarschen
🇵🇱 Polish
jazda gęsiego
🇷🇴 Romanian
șirul indian
🇩🇰 Danish
gåsegang
🇳🇴 Norwegian
på rekke

English says « single file », never « Indian file » — the phrase exists but sounds dated. German is the most vivid: im Gänsemarsch, « goose march ». It's the basic formation on a hack.

to keep your distance

🇫🇷 French
garder ses distances
🇪🇸 Spanish
guardar las distancias
🇮🇹 Italian
tenere le distanze
🇩🇪 German
Abstand halten
🇯🇵 Japanese

🇸🇪 Swedish
hålla avstånd
🇵🇱 Polish
zachować odstęp
🇷🇴 Romanian
a păstra distanța
🇩🇰 Danish
holde afstand
🇳🇴 Norwegian
holde avstand

The rule that prevents everything else. A horse too close behind ends up wanting to pass — and a horse being passed thinks he's been asked to race. Keep one horse's length, about three metres: enough not to be kicked if the one in front stops dead.

the wet sand

🇫🇷 French
le sable mouillé
🇪🇸 Spanish
la arena mojada
🇮🇹 Italian
la sabbia bagnata
🇩🇪 German
der nasse Sand
🇯🇵 Japanese

🇵🇱 Polish
mokry piasek
🇷🇴 Romanian
nisipul ud
🇩🇰 Danish
det våde sand

The firm strip left by the retreating sea. The only one you can canter on: dry sand tires tendons within minutes.

el jinete experimentado
🇮🇹 Italian
il cavaliere esperto
🇩🇪 German
der erfahrene Reiter

🇵🇱 Polish
doświadczony jeździec
🇷🇴 Romanian
călărețul experimentat
🇩🇰 Danish
den erfarne rytter
🇳🇴 Norwegian
den erfarne rytteren

Someone who already rides. The lagoon swim is reserved for them: beginners get the beach, not the deep water, and you must be able to swim. Stating your level honestly decides which ride you are offered.

the guide

🇫🇷 French
le guide
🇪🇸 Spanish
el guía
🇮🇹 Italian
la guida
🇩🇪 German
der Führer
🇯🇵 Japanese
ガイド (gaido)

🇧🇷 Brazilian Portuguese

🇸🇪 Swedish
guiden
🇵🇱 Polish
przewodnik
🇷🇴 Romanian
ghidul
🇩🇰 Danish

The one who leads the ride and knows the bottom. You do not pass the guide: he knows where the sand gives way.

the fresh water

🇫🇷 French
l'eau douce
🇪🇸 Spanish
el agua dulce
🇮🇹 Italian
l'acqua dolce
🇩🇪 German
das Süßwasser
🇯🇵 Japanese

a água doce
🇸🇪 Swedish
sötvattnet
🇵🇱 Polish
słodka woda
🇷🇴 Romanian
apa dulce
🇩🇰 Danish
ferskvandet
🇳🇴 Norwegian
ferskvannet

The rinse afterwards. Salt drying on the coat irritates and stiffens it: rinsing is not a nicety, it is part of the ride.

to ride bareback

🇫🇷 French
monter à cru
🇪🇸 Spanish
montar a pelo
🇮🇹 Italian
montare a pelo
🇩🇪 German
ohne Sattel reiten
🇯🇵 Japanese

rida barbacka
🇵🇱 Polish
jeździć na oklep
🇷🇴 Romanian
a călări fără șa
🇩🇰 Danish
ride uden sadel
🇳🇴 Norwegian
ri barbakk

Without a saddle, straight on the horse's back. In the water it makes particular sense: saddle leather does not take kindly to salt or sand, so the swim is often done bareback. You feel the horse swimming beneath you, and you never forget it.

to get your horse into the water

🇫🇷 French
faire entrer son cheval dans l'eau
🇪🇸 Spanish
meter el caballo en el agua
🇮🇹 Italian
far entrare il cavallo in acqua
🇩🇪 German

🇵🇱 Polish
wprowadzić konia do wody
🇷🇴 Romanian
a-ți băga calul în apă
🇩🇰 Danish
få sin hest ud i vandet
🇳🇴 Norwegian
få hesten ut i vannet

The key move here, and the hardest: many horses refuse water. You don't drive them straight in — you follow another horse, take your time, walk forward and give as soon as he steps in. A horse that's forced learns to refuse.

rising trot

🇫🇷 French
le trot enlevé
🇪🇸 Spanish
el trote levantado
🇮🇹 Italian
il trotto battuto
🇩🇪 German
das Leichttraben

lätt trav
🇵🇱 Polish
kłus anglezowany
🇷🇴 Romanian
trapul ridicat
🇩🇰 Danish
letridningen
🇳🇴 Norwegian
lettridningen

Rising and sitting in rhythm with the trot. It lets you trot for a long time without tiring the horse's back — essential on a hack. British riders say « rising », Americans « posting ».

to gallop in a light seat

galoper en équilibre
🇪🇸 Spanish

🇵🇱 Polish
galop w półsiadzie
🇷🇴 Romanian
a galopa în poziție de echilibru
🇩🇰 Danish
galoppere i let sæde
🇳🇴 Norwegian
galoppere i lett sits

Seat out of the saddle, weight in the stirrups, body slightly forward. That's how you gallop for a long time on sand without weighing on the horse's back. Also called « two-point »: two points of contact instead of three.

to sit to the canter

🇫🇷 French
galoper assis
🇪🇸 Spanish
galopar sentado
🇮🇹 Italian
galoppare seduto
🇩🇪 German

🇷🇴 Romanian
a galopa așezat
🇩🇰 Danish
galoppere i fuldt sæde
🇳🇴 Norwegian
sitte ned i galopp

Seat in the saddle, hips following the movement. Used when you need control — in water, on changing ground, or when the horse gets keen. The opposite of the light seat: one to go far, one to hold.

to grab the mane

🇫🇷 French
attraper la crinière
🇪🇸 Spanish
agarrarse a las crines
🇮🇹 Italian
afferrare la criniera
🇩🇪 German
die Mähne greifen
🇯🇵 Japanese

🇧🇷 Brazilian Portuguese
segurar na crina
🇸🇪 Swedish
ta tag i manen
🇵🇱 Polish
złapać się grzywy
🇷🇴 Romanian
a te prinde de coamă
🇩🇰 Danish
tage fat i manen
🇳🇴 Norwegian
ta tak i manen

To steady yourself without pulling on the mouth. The mane has no nerves: holding it does nothing to the horse, while grabbing the reins makes him speed up or hurts his mouth. Learn it BEFORE you need it — in water, bareback, or on a spook.

to trot in a light seat

🇫🇷 French
trotter en équilibre
🇪🇸 Spanish
trotar en equilibrio
🇮🇹 Italian
trottare in equilibrio
🇩🇪 German
im leichten Sitz traben
🇯🇵 Japanese
軽く腰を浮かせて速歩する (karuku koshi o ukasete hayaashi suru)

🇵🇱 Polish
kłus w półsiadzie
🇷🇴 Romanian
a trota în poziție de echilibru
🇩🇰 Danish
trave i let sæde
🇳🇴 Norwegian
trave i lett sits

Neither sitting nor rising: the seat stays out of the saddle, the weight in the stirrups, as in the light-seat canter. Used on a long trot over uneven ground, or to spare a young horse's back. Same words as at the canter: light seat, two-point.

to rise on the correct diagonal

🇫🇷 French
trotter enlevé sur le bon diagonal
🇪🇸 Spanish
trotar levantado en el diagonal correcto
🇮🇹 Italian
trottare battuto sulla diagonale giusta

anglezować na właściwą nogę
🇷🇴 Romanian
a face trap ridicat pe diagonala corectă
🇩🇰 Danish
letride på den rigtige diagonal
🇳🇴 Norwegian
lettri på riktig diagonal

In rising trot, you rise as the outside shoulder goes forward and sit as it comes back. On the wrong diagonal the horse loses balance in the turns; out hacking, change diagonals now and then so both sides tire the same. The Germans say « the right foot » (der richtige Fuß).
