un caballo rápido
🇮🇹 Italian
un cavallo veloce

🇵🇱 Polish
szybki koń
🇷🇴 Romanian
un cal rapid
🇩🇰 Danish
en hurtig hest
🇳🇴 Norwegian
en rask hest

The opposite of a quiet horse, for someone who already rides. In a yard you would say « forward » rather than « fast »: a horse that goes of its own accord, without being pushed. Not a horse that runs away with you — a horse with impulsion.

a nice horse

🇫🇷 French
un cheval sympa
🇪🇸 Spanish
un caballo bueno
🇮🇹 Italian
un cavallo buono
🇩🇪 German
ein nettes Pferd

🇵🇱 Polish
miły koń
🇷🇴 Romanian
un cal cuminte
🇩🇰 Danish
en sød hest
🇳🇴 Norwegian
en snill hest

The horse you ask for when you are not feeling confident. « A nice horse » works, but it is the most ambiguous phrase in horse English — it can mean kind, or well-bred. « A kind horse » is safer, and « a genuine horse » safest of all: one that never surprises you.

to pass in front of him

przejść przed nim
🇷🇴 Romanian
a trece prin fața lui
🇩🇰 Danish

don't walk behind him

🇫🇷 French
ne passe pas derrière lui
🇪🇸 Spanish
no pases por detrás
🇮🇹 Italian
non passare dietro
🇩🇪 German
geh nicht hinter ihm vorbei
🇯🇵 Japanese

🇸🇪 Swedish
gå inte bakom honom
🇵🇱 Polish
nie przechodź za nim
🇷🇴 Romanian
nu trece prin spatele lui
🇩🇰 Danish
gå ikke bag ham
🇳🇴 Norwegian
ikke gå bak ham

The sentence shouted in every yard in the world. If you truly must pass behind, pass very close with a hand on him: a horse kicks with room, not from touching distance.

speak to him before you touch him

🇫🇷 French
préviens-le avant de le toucher
🇪🇸 Spanish
háblale antes de tocarlo
🇮🇹 Italian

Voice first, hand second. A startled horse defends himself; a warned horse waits.

n'enroule pas la longe
🇪🇸 Spanish
no te enrolles la cuerda en la mano
🇮🇹 Italian
non avvolgere la corda alla mano

🇷🇴 Romanian
nu înfășura funia pe mână
🇩🇰 Danish
vikl ikke træktovet om hånden
🇳🇴 Norwegian
ikke surr tauet rundt hånden

The habit that breaks fingers. Hold the rope folded in your hand, never coiled round it: if the horse goes, the rope must be able to run.

keep your distance

🇫🇷 French
garde tes distances
🇪🇸 Spanish
guarda las distancias
🇮🇹 Italian
mantieni le distanze
🇩🇪 German
halte Abstand
🇯🇵 Japanese

🇵🇱 Polish
zachowaj odstęp
🇷🇴 Romanian
păstrează distanța
🇩🇰 Danish

In a lesson, one horse's length between you and the one ahead. That distance prevents a kick, the commonest accident in any yard.

🇪🇸 Spanish
¡cuidado!
🇮🇹 Italian

🇪🇸 Spanish
¡suelta!
🇮🇹 Italian
lascia!
🇩🇪 German

släpp!
🇵🇱 Polish
puść!
🇷🇴 Romanian
dă-i drumul!
🇩🇰 Danish
slip!
🇳🇴 Norwegian

The least intuitive order here, and the one that saves hands. If the horse tears away, let go: you do not argue with five hundred kilos.
